An Act to consolidate the law affecting agricultural tenancies; to provide compensation for tenant-right improvements; and to regulate notices to quit.

Part IAgricultural Tenancies

1 Notice to Quit

(1)A notice to quit an agricultural holding shall be invalid if it purports to terminate the tenancy before the expiration of twelve months from the end of the current year of tenancy.

(2)The tenant of an agricultural holding served with a notice to quit may serve a counter-notice requiring the consent of the Agricultural Land Tribunal.

Part IITenant Rights and Compensation

2 Compensation for Improvements

On quitting a holding on termination of the tenancy, the tenant shall be entitled to obtain from the landlord compensation for the unexhausted manurial value of fertilisers and temporary leys.

3 Distress for Rent

It shall not be lawful for a landlord entitled to the rent of an agricultural holding to distrain for rent which became due more than one year before the making of the distress.

4 Citation

This Act may be cited as the Agricultural Holdings and Tenancies Act.
