An Act to consolidate enactments relating to the prevention of cruelty to domestic animals, captive beasts, and livestock; and for connected purposes.

Part ICruelty Offences

1 Cruelty to Domestic Animals

(1)If any person shall cruelly beat, kick, ill-treat, override, overload, torture, or terrify any domestic or captive animal, or cause or procure any animal to be so used, he shall be guilty of an offence of cruelty.

(2)Every person convicted of an offence of cruelty under this section shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £25, or to imprisonment for not more than three months.

2 Abandonment and Starvation

Any owner or keeper of any domestic animal who unreasonably fails to supply such animal with wholesome food, water, or shelter shall be guilty of an offence.

Part IIPowers of Constables

3 Taking Custody of Mistreated Animals

A constable may take charge of any mistreated animal and deposit the same in some place of safe custody until the charge is heard by the magistrates.

4 Citation

This Act may be cited as the Protection of Animals and Livestock Act.
