Part ICompulsory Admission to Hospital
1 Admission for Observation
(1)A patient may be admitted to a hospital and there detained for observation upon an application made on the ground that he is suffering from mental disorder of a nature or degree which warrants his detention for the protection of himself or others.
(2)An application for admission for observation shall be founded on the written medical recommendations of two registered medical practitioners.
(3)A patient admitted under this section may not be detained for a period exceeding twenty-eight days unless further detention for treatment is authorised according to law.
2 Emergency Admission
In any case of urgent necessity, an application for admission for observation may be made by a mental welfare officer or spouse, and shall admit of detention not exceeding seventy-two hours on one medical recommendation.
